“He felt pain at forcing himself to keep away from her. Pain he could manage. Pain, he knew. It would subside. It must.” A Heart of Ice and Shadow by Ashley Lockwood is the second book in the series. Sirius is used to battle but not those of the heart. Gwen, a curious and fearless mortal, steps into his life and shakes him to the core. The hound of hell, Sirus, has to strategize, and not for war. Gwen is still in danger from the high priestess. Their little group is ready to protect her at all costs, even if it means sending her away. What does that mean for Gwen and Sirus?
The characters, each with their individuality, play a part in making the book entertaining. Their dialogue provides invaluable insights into their distinctive personalities. For example, Levian and Barith, never get along and seem to love getting under each other’s skin. The indifference in tone from Sirus. The themes that seem to reoccur are love and hope. They all hold onto it as they figure out Gwen’s lineage and power. Bonds that were broken are mended; this is through Niah and Sirus. The book is captivating and a good read.
